Wednesday 28th January - walk ***** – One House near Stowmarket –
foggy start then sunny and still.
After yesterdays wind and rain when Storm Chandra passed through today
could not have been different, foggy start followed by lovely winter
sunshine with light airs, just perfect:) I had seen a walk to a beautiful
thatched Church at Harleston near Stowmarket on Discover Suffolk on
Facebook and as Mag and I used to live in the area several years ago we
thought it would be nice to return to the area! I got up early, had
breakfast and did my exercises before packing a picnic and left Felixstowe
at 10.30. The misty/fog was clearing leaving lovely sunshine and as we were
early I made a detour to Needham Lake after seeing loads of flood water
enroute. The lake was busy with walkers and the model boat club were there
enjoying some lovely conditions although too light for their yachts! We
continued along a very busy Needham high street, past our old flat before
turning off to see the impressive Mill with the water rushing through! We
then took the Creeting road into Stowmarket which has changed beyond
recognition from when we lived and worked in the area, some massive
warehouses and new houses everywhere! We had a drive past Mags Mum and Dads
bungalow which sadly looked a little sad:( Then taking a country lane to
One House looking for the start of the walk at Northfield woods which we
eventually found and parked on the road near the village hall. We walked to
the start of the wooded section and it was lovely with some nice wide paths
through the tree but everywhere was very wet after yesterdays heavy rain
but we had our wellies on and not no problems. Mag had the bird song app on
and we quickly picked up loads of birds and didn’t see another human for
most of the walk! We did get in a muddle as we looked for the exit but
after some scrambling over ditches and through the woods we found the main
path again spotting a deer and a squirrel! Out of the trees now the wide
farm track curved round as we reached the Harleston road as we got the
first view of the small thatched church. It is approached up an avenue of
trees and is just stunning sitting all by itself surrounded by rolling
Suffolk countryside. Considering the church dates from the 10th century
there were not that many gravestones. We found the perfect bench for our
picnic lunch in the sunshine, a man on a bike arrived from Bury St, Edmunds
who told us the very sad story of the Armstrong Family who lost 5 children
from diphtheria in 1891, check out the link below for more details! Well
rested we followed the wide bridle way to the One House road which we
crossed and did a loop coming out at another top church, St. John the
Baptist at One House with its round tower! It was then a half mile back to
the road and the van, we were chuffed to spot a Goldcrest inn the hedgerow!
We were pleased to get back the to van as we were knackered and my heel is
still playing me up, we took the scenic route back to the A 14 via Shelland
before Mag took over the driving! Home for a cuppa and slice of fruit
bread, I did quickly drive down to Felixstowe dock view point for the
sunset but I was too late really, still never mind a really top day, so
lucky to live in Suffolk!
